That threatened war, but the Reapers arrived about six months after that after taking the long way and arriving in Batarian space without the use of the Bahak system's relay. Despite the Project's crew becoming indoctrinated, Shepard finished the job and destroyed the relay, but the resulting detonation wiped out the Bahak system and all the Batarians who lived there. Commander Shepard, as per Admiral Hackett's personal request, rescued her and finished the Project that was designed to ram an asteroid into that system's mass relay to disrupt the Reaper invasion. Kinson of the Alliance had covertly traveled to Batarian space to look into this and was captured. A certain mass relay in the Bahak system was the front door for the Reaper invasion, and the Batarians living there had no idea. The Batarian people suffered greatly when the Reapers prepared for their invasion. Related: Mass Effect: The Life of Javik, Prothean Avatar of Vengeance, Revealed As far as Shepard can tell, Batarian members of the Blue Suns are not particularly hostile toward their human compatriots perhaps their loyalty to the Blue Suns is stronger than their loyalty to the Hegemony. Many of them have joined the Blue Suns mercenary army, working alongside numerous Turians and, interestingly enough, humans. Commander Shepard arrived with a squad and took down Balak and his men, saving the colony.Īs of 2185, Batarians are not only slavers, but often mercenaries as well, often operating out in the Terminus Systems. Balak explained this as an act of revenge for the sorry state of the Batarian people, who lived on "whatever we can scrounge up" because they didn't live in Citadel space. He and his men hijacked a large astroid orbiting the human colony world of Terra Nova and used its rocket thrusters to try and slam the asteroid into the planet (and wipe out its entire colony). The Batarians continue to have a negative relationship with humanity and, to a lesser extent, the galaxy as a whole. They continued to raid human colonies on a small scale, usually in slaver raids, and in 2183, an extremist named Balak took the next step. RELATED: Mass Effect: Palaven, The Fortified Turian Homeworld, Revealed Batarians in Recent History Finally, the Batarians found themselves on the defensive, and they retreated to their own systems, giving up their colonial interests to the Alliance and sparking a bitter feud. The Hegemony and Alliance were entering full-scale war. Dismayed, the Hegemony implored the Council to help, but after no aid came, the Batarians responded to human colonization efforts with force. Humanity had entered the scene and, unaware of the Batarians' presence, Alliance colonists tried to settle in Batarian space.

However, the Batarians became more and more aggressive toward their neighbors, such as the Asari and the Salarians, and they faced more and more sanctions until a tipping point was reached. For a time, the Batarians were expanding across space in peace and had ambassadors and diplomats aboard the Citadel. The Batarian race's relationships with other species are generally negative, shaped by events from the last 300 years or so. Propaganda (much of it anti-human) is common, and the state itself controls companies like arms dealers. Overall, the Batarian Hegemony (their civilization) is tight-tipped about its ways and has a reputation for being a closed-off police state.

It is a sign of extreme hostility to kill a Batarian and damage their eyeballs as well. For example, Batarians believe that when an individual dies, their soul escapes through their four eyes, so Batarians take care for a dead body's eyes to be open, uncovered and undamaged.

However, little is known about their general society or culture, aside from a few scattered details. RELATED: Mass Effect: The Hanar, the Protheans' Worshipers, Explained
Batarian homeworld skin#
Their skin tones range from a brownish-yellow color to dark green to teal, somewhat similar to the Salarian race's skin tones, and they have fine hair on their faces. Batarians have flat noses with many ridges and folds, and their mouths are noted for having many pointed teeth. These aliens are humanoids like the Asari, but they are noted for having four eyes, with two in the "normal" location on the head and two more eyes set above those. Batarians are not often seen outside their own systems, but still, their general physiology is well known.
